This post is a bit delayed since the dessert is Christmas themed but it is too good not to share. So here is my “How to Make Snowmen Cake Balls Post.”
Let me start off by saying, Cake Balls are the best thing that happened to me in 2011. They are amazing and probably resulted in 8 of the 10 pounds that I gained during the holidays, but I wouldn’t want it any other way since they are that good. Okay, so let’s get into the details so you can head into your kitchen and find out how amazing Cake Balls really are. Oh, and the good news is that you can make your Cake Balls any theme, design or color depending on the season or occasion that you are making them for. So I guess it is okay that this post is delayed since Cake Balls can and should be made all year round. Oh, and I just realized that it is wintertime so Snowmen Cake Balls are still timely - yay!
Ingredients:
1 box cake mix (cook as directed on box for 13 X 9 cake)
1 can frosting (16 oz.)
1 – 2 packages of wilton candy melts
Decorating materials to make your Cake Balls festive (for the Snowmen we used black and orange frosting, as well as some glitter sprinkles)
Step-By-Step Instructions:
1. Choose the cake of your choice. I personally recommend using a Red Velvet cake mix but any cake mix will do. Make your cake as you would normally (aka read the back of the box). Once the cake is baked, take it out of the oven and let it cool
2. Wash your hands
3. Remove the cake from the pan and crumble it into a large bowl
4. Mix the crumbled cake with a little less than 1 can of frosting. It is way easier to use your hands to mix together the cake and icing…so just use your (clean) hands
5. After your mixture is entirely mixed, roll the mixture in to 20 – 30 quarter size balls (or bigger if you like) and place on a wax paper covered cookie sheet
6. Melt candy melts over a stove while continually stirring
7. Stick a fork or stick into a cake ball and dip it into the melted candy creating a smooth coating
8. Return dipped Cake Ball onto cookie sheet
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for all other rolled Cake Balls
10. Place in freezer to harden
11. Decorate accordingly per the season and/or occasion
12. Eat as many as you can before serving because once everyone tastes how amazing they are you might not get another. Seriously though. Enjoy!
Thanks to Katie and Maura for bringing Cake Balls into my life, thanks to Court for the pictures and thanks to CJ for making her Snowmen as deformed as mine :)
